The point of no return

Demolition day has come at last. Days, actually. Which surprised us because we honestly thought if you just looked at that old shack funny it'd fall over. But it took four days in total to tear it down and wipe out an other old Hermosa beach cottage. Sorry.

It took a day for the crew to unpick some parts of the house that are safer and more easily salvaged that way.

It looked a bit like a bomb had hit it afterwards. But I've seen 'remodels' around here leave less standing, so I was looking forward to seeing more damage done.

The next day they brought the bulldozer on site. That was Veteran's Day, and Hermosa rules prevent construction taking place during a public holiday. But they had to shave a smidge off the side of the house just to be able to park the bulldozer so technically a little teeny bit of house was demolished that day. That's my kind of parking, just make a bit of room for your vehicle and hang the consequences.

On Thursday they really went to town. The bulldozer tore up that flimsy little house like Penelope eating a King's Hawaiian roll. By the middle of the afternoon it was all down, in bits, and being taken out into trucks piece by piece. California requires that construction waste is taken to a recycling centre but a little bird told me some of these materials will head south of the border for immediate reuse. Reuse is preferable to recycling so that's all good with me.

I said the bulldozer tore the house up but inexplicably this section of living room wall was left till Friday. It soon came down.

We are now the proud owners of an empty lot. It looks bigger than I expected! Which is encouraging because we have clearly reached the point of no return and we really are going to have to build this house now.

Now I'm waiting for us to be featured in one of those 'save the South Bay' instas. The ones I like and follow because I love those charming old beach cottages and am always so sad when they are torn down. As previously posted, this place did not fit that bill - hopefully our neighbors agree.
